Family is an amazing thing. If you have a good one, you probably go through times thinking “why do I have to be around these weird people so much” not appreciating the incredibly valuable but unquantifiable value of having people in your life that love you unconditionally. If you are far from your family or have lost family members, you yearn for that kind of “nuisance” in your life.
Families are the one thing on this earth you can’t escape, and shouldn’t try to. We often run from God, and realize he is still there. We also often only look for him when we need him. Families are similar. I have gone through periods of my life when I have “forgotten” about my family, and even “scorned” my family. But they are still there, still supporting me, still loving me. They are the quickest to forgive my errors, quickest to call me good when I’m not.
My mom has always been a solid presence in my life. I’m not sure she knew a lot of how to raise me and my brother, but she never stopped loving us, never stopped supporting us. She acknowledges us publicly even when we are embarrassed by it. And she is always there when we are in pain. I haven’t lost a parent yet, but have been near those that have and I know how painful it can be. I know I will miss the support and unconditional cheerleading. Like other blog themes recently I hope to savor it now while I can and enjoy the moment.
So on this important day I think of Mom and tell her I love her and support her unconditionally too.
